What is Glutathione?

Overview

Glutathione is a tripeptide — glutamate, cysteine, glycine — produced in the liver in quantities measured in grams per day. Every cell uses it. Every oxidative insult consumes it. Chronic inflammation, alcohol load, environmental toxin exposure, and aging all draw it down faster than the liver synthesizes it. Why it’s the most-studied antioxidant despite being the least marketed: GSH isn’t a scavenger like vitamin C — it’s the enzymatic substrate that glutathione peroxidase uses to neutralize peroxides. It recycles vitamin C and vitamin E back to active forms. It conjugates Phase-II liver detox metabolites. It’s the actual workhorse behind the antioxidant claims everyone else makes.
